Protecting the Most Vulnerable Through Awareness and Action

Every year on July 28, the world comes together to recognize World Hepatitis Day—a reminder of a global health issue that often goes unnoticed. More than a million lives are lost annually to hepatitis, and that number is still climbing.

But here’s the troubling part: hepatitis is preventable, treatable, and in many cases, curable. So why are so many people still affected?

Despite the availability of accurate tests, affordable treatments, and a vaccine that can prevent 95% of hepatitis B infections in newborns, millions of people remain at risk. The reasons are deeply rooted in low awareness, misinformation, and the stigma that discourages people from seeking care.

At Richmond Community Services, we support individuals with developmental disabilities—and part of that support means doing everything we can to keep them safe and healthy. Our team is trained to follow strict health protocols, including routine vaccinations, hygiene practices, and preventative care measures that help reduce the risk of hepatitis and other infections.

We recognize that people with developmental disabilities may face unique challenges in accessing healthcare and understanding complex health issues. That’s why we take extra care to communicate clearly, advocate for their needs, and create a safe environment where they receive the care they deserve.

While we work every day to protect our residents, we also know that change is needed far beyond our doors. Combating hepatitis globally requires action—from healthcare providers, policymakers, families, and communities.

This World Hepatitis Day, we encourage you to learn more, spread the word, and be part of the movement to eliminate this disease.
