August 17 — National Nonprofit Day is more than just a date on the calendar. It’s a call to recognize the shared values that fuel our collective work: empathy, generosity, and community. At Richmond Community Services, these values are not theoretical. They shape everything we do, from advocating for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to creating inclusive opportunities where everyone can thrive.

Today, we pause to honor the incredible network of people who make nonprofit work possible: dedicated staff, passionate volunteers, loyal donors, and resilient individuals and families we support. Their commitment reminds us that buildings or budgets don’t define the nonprofit sector; it’s defined by people lifting each other daily.

The Spirit Behind the Day

National Nonprofit Day traces its origins to the Tariff Act of 1894, which granted tax exemptions to charitable organizations, a pivotal step in formalizing nonprofit work in the U.S. Since then, the sector has evolved to become an essential thread in the fabric of American life. Today, over 1.5 million nonprofits are nationwide, working across every issue imaginable — from housing and health to education and human rights.

Richmond Community Services is proud to be part of that legacy. Our mission is to provide person-centered, life-enriching services that foster growth, independence, and dignity. We do this through our programs, partnerships, and trust with families and the wider community.
