Celebrating the Heart of Our Community

At Richmond, friendship isn’t just a value—it’s a way of life. As we celebrate International Friendship Day 2025, we honor our community’s meaningful connections that grow daily.

Friendship Day, officially recognized by the United Nations and celebrated annually on July 30, is more than just a date on the calendar. It’s a global reminder of the power of human connection—a reminder that no matter where we come from, who we are, or what we face, the bonds we form can bring us closer to peace, understanding, and joy.

This year’s theme, “Sharing the human spirit through friendship,” couldn’t ring more true for our residents and staff. Here at Richmond, we witness the incredible strength of friendship daily. Many of our residents have formed deep, lasting bonds—whether over shared hobbies, afternoon chats, or simply being there for each other during challenging moments. Even more special is how these connections often extend to our staff, who are not just caregivers or team members but also trusted companions and allies in life’s journey.

Friendships like these are more than feel-good moments—they’re essential. For people with developmental disabilities, strong relationships can foster greater confidence, encourage independence, and provide a profound sense of belonging. Friendships nurture empathy, boost mental and emotional well-being, and help create a supportive environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.

As we mark this special day, let’s take a moment to appreciate the friends—old and new—who make our lives brighter. Whether planning a group activity, sharing a laugh over coffee, or simply offering a kind word, every act of friendship strengthens the fabric of our community.

Here are a few ways we encourage residents to build bonds and friendships:

  • Sharing special moments — We celebrate holidays, birthdays, and critical milestones together, making everyone feel recognized and included.

  • Meaningful time together — Outings during the summer, trips to places like Playland, baseball games, and friendly team-building games help strengthen connections and create lasting memories.

  • Creative expression — Arts and crafts sessions provide a creative outlet and a chance to support one another and build camaraderie.

  • Community gatherings — Participating in Richmond events allows everyone to reflect on friendship and feel part of something bigger.

Let’s continue to build a community rooted in trust, kindness, and connection—because at Richmond, friendship truly is at the heart of everything we do.

Happy International Friendship Day 2025!
