Paws, Love, and Therapy: National Dog Appreciation Day at Richmond Community Services
On August 26, we join communities nationwide in celebrating National Dog Appreciation Day, a chance to reflect on the love, comfort, and companionship dogs bring into our lives. At Richmond Community Services, we know dogs are more than pets. They are family, friends, and in many cases, trusted partners in care and emotional well-being.
The Power of Companionship
For many of the individuals we support, dogs provide comfort that words alone cannot. A wagging tail, a soft nuzzle, or sitting quietly together can brighten a day and ease stress or anxiety. Research shows that time with dogs can boost mood, reduce anxiety, and even encourage physical activity, making them a natural fit for our mission of fostering safe, supportive, and engaging environments.
Our staff often shares how their dogs bring light into their homes, and we are grateful to our community partners who bring therapy dogs to visit. These moments never fail to spark smiles and create connections that lift spirits for both residents and staff.
Stories That Inspire:
Bocker the Labradoodle
One unforgettable example of the power of animal companionship is Bocker, a Labradoodle therapy dog featured in a heartfelt “Above & Beyond” segment from ABC7 Eyewitness News. Hosted by Michelle Charlesworth, the story highlights Bocker’s therapy sessions at Richmond Community Services in Yonkers, where he brought joy, comfort, and even motivation to occupational therapy activities.
In therapy sessions, Bocker’s mom, Marie, shared how he worked his magic, sometimes literally making waves. His presence reminded everyone that healing and progress can come from connection, compassion, and creativity.

Stella the Hero Dog
Another inspiring story is Stella, a devoted dog owned by Lenore Levy, who was honored as a finalist in the 2012 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards. Stella was recognized for her extraordinary companionship and the positive emotional support she provided to individuals with developmental disabilities.
Richmond Community Services proudly celebrated Stella’s recognition, reflecting our commitment to creating enriching, family-like experiences through our residences, day programs, and respite services. Stacy Lynn Rivera, Volunteer Program Specialist at RCS, highlighted how therapy animals like Stella enhance emotional well-being and foster community connection.
