July 23rd marks National Vanilla Ice Cream Day
We couldn’t think of a sweeter way to celebrate summer than with a scoop (or two) of this timeless favorite!
Vanilla ice cream has charmed taste buds for over 200 years, and its story is as rich as its flavor. Here’s a quick look at why this classic dessert deserves a holiday and how we joined the celebration at Richmond.
A Brief Scoop on National Vanilla Ice Cream Day
Why July 23?
While vanilla ice cream has existed for centuries, this unofficial holiday has only been observed annually since around 2000. It’s a day dedicated to honoring vanilla—the elegant, understated queen of ice cream flavors.
Where it all began:
Vanilla comes from the orchid plant and was first used for flavoring by the Totonacs and Aztecs in Mexico. After reaching Europe, it quickly found its way into early ice cream recipes, particularly in France, where it gained popularity.
A presidential fan:
In the 1780s, Thomas Jefferson brought a vanilla ice cream recipe home from France, helping popularize it in the United States. His original handwritten recipe is now preserved in the Library of Congress—a testament to the flavor’s early American roots.
A New York connection:
While vanilla ice cream was first noted in America in 1744, it was New Yorker Jacob Fussell who revolutionized it in the 1860s–1870s by mass-producing it. This made the once-elite treat widely accessible and helped vanilla become a favorite nationwide.
Vanilla’s reign today:
Thanks to its smooth, comforting taste and incredible versatility, vanilla remains the world’s most popular ice cream flavor. It’s the perfect base, pairing, and for many, the perfect scoop.
How We Celebrated
At Richmond Community Services, we took this occasion to slow down and savor the moment. We gathered as a team to enjoy ice cream, mingle with colleagues and interns, and celebrate the joy of summer. It was a fun and flavorful way to reconnect, cool off, and appreciate the small things that unite people.
